Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does the cable car take me to the top of Teide?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding on the island. The cable car ends at La Rambleta, 3,555 m. The actual summit is 160 m higher at 3,715 m and needs a separate national park permit – currently €15 without a guide, €10 with one, free under 14. Slots open up to 56 days ahead and sell out. Book the permit first, then the cable car.

Will we really see whales?

Around 200 short-finned pilot whales live permanently in the Teno-Rasca strip between Tenerife and La Gomera, so sightings happen on the large majority of trips, in January as much as in July. Bottlenose dolphins are almost as reliable. The big migratory whales are not, and an operator who guarantees them is overselling.

Which port should I leave from?

Los Gigantes sits closest to the cliffs and the deep water, so a two-hour trip from there covers what a three-hour trip from Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos covers. The southern ports are bigger, cheaper and have more departures – if you are staying in Playa de las Américas, the drive west may cost you more than the extra hour on the boat.

Do I need a rental car?

Not for the south. Almost every tour includes hotel pickup from Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. You need a car if you want the north – La Laguna, Anaga, Garachico – on your own schedule, because the bus takes roughly twice as long as the drive.

How far in advance should I book?

The Teide cable car and the Masca gorge permit are the two things that genuinely sell out – days ahead in season for the cable car, and the gorge runs only Wednesday to Saturday with a capped number of walkers per half hour. Boat trips are usually fine a day or two before. Since almost everything cancels free up to 24 hours ahead, booking early costs nothing.

Are the tours suitable for children?

The larger whale-watching catamarans take children of any age and carry child life jackets. Speedboats and quads set their own limits – buggy and quad operators here commonly require 6 to 8 years for the passenger seat, and the Masca gorge does not admit under-8s at all. Every booking page states its own minimum age; that is the number to go by, not ours.
